One of our recent projects took us to the small Wheatbelt town of Mukinbudin, where we were called in to assist Winchester Industries Quarry with a critical equipment upgrade.
Project Overview: VSD Replacement and Starter Installation
The quarry was experiencing issues with its Variable Speed Drive (VSD), which had been showing signs of underperformance. Our team quickly identified that the output voltage was significantly lower than expected—measuring around 175V AC phase-to-phase. While this might have appeared acceptable on the surface, it was likely contributing to the operational issues.
To resolve the problem and improve long-term reliability, we replaced the VSD with a transformer starter configured in a star/delta/star sequence. This setup offers robust starting performance for large motors, particularly in heavy-duty environments like a quarry.
Handling the Heavy Lifting—Literally
The new transformer starter wasn’t your average install. Weighing in at around 300kg, it took a coordinated effort from three of our experienced electricians to maneuver it into place once delivered by I.T. Heavy equipment is no issue for our team—we're equipped and ready for projects of all sizes.
Troubleshooting and Commissioning
During installation, we encountered a minor issue with the new starter’s timer module, which was not engaging as expected. After testing and troubleshooting, we determined the timer was faulty and quickly replaced it with a new one. Once resolved, the system performed flawlessly.
The new startup sequence was configured as follows:
Contactor 1 and 2 pull in for the first 10 seconds,
After the delay, the timer activates Contactor 3 (full-speed operation),
At that point, Contactors 1 and 2 drop out.
